Caverns of Underkeep : The Road to Alpha 2 Entry #1

December 17th, 2007 · 9 Comments

After getting some good feedback from the alpha demo and a continously running demo that a few people have access to, I’ve got a big list of stuff to complete for the next public demo.

The target date for alpha 2.0 is Jan 15, 2008 and will contain 5 levels of the dungeon.

Over the last couple of days I’ve been tidying stuff up, fixing bugs that have been there for ages (and adding new ones in the process) making minor graphics changes and just generally tweaking and proding around. Mostly uninteresting stuff, but it all has to get done sometime.

I’ve also added a restart button so when you die, you don’t have to hit refresh on your browser if you want to play again - Yay!

I really want to get onto the mini-games - I’ve got two different styles of puzzle chests planned and I think they’ll be quite a hit. There is also going to be some kind of gambling in the Inn (which doesn’t exist at the moment) and maybe somekind of ‘flirt with the barmaid’ game, but I can’t quite imagine how that one would work :) Perhaps I should stick a dinner-dash component in, where you have to serve customers dwarven ale in order to earn some extra gold. And if you get their order wrong they’ll start to pummel you?

Maybe not…

I’ve also drawn some new graphics, probably the best I’ve done so far. The character on the far left is an option for the players avatar, but the others are going to be bad guys.

    Double Yay!

I like the idea of the fact that if you screw up in a minigame, you may loose health. Maybe in the games that make substantially more money than others could be the most dangerous. The only problem with that is you can just go to the healers and get fixed up again, perhaps your max hp could get stunted or something? I think that a minigame where you pay ‘The Elder Wizard’ to teleport you into a maze full of ‘chests’ for X minutes/seconds (would have to be tested). The further you get into the maze, the rarer the item you may get. Also, this maze would be rife with traps, maybe wild monsters, and hopefully chests that turn into/contain grumpy monsters. I know you have tonnes of ideas at present, but like I said, I’ll always have more :)

Oh, I forgot to add, you’re getting pretty good at these monsters… Very nice indeed… who needs an artist when the programmer can draw.

It started mysteriously working on my computer again… Yay! The new character graphics are cute :) In fact the whole game is quite a bit cooler since I last played it.

But… There are still tmp bunnys on level 5, and when you finish the demo, it comes up with a notice saying you were killed, over-layed by the “congratulations” notice. It’s kinda random. For the record my score was 25,978 and I kick arse har har.

    Thanks for the report Kristie!
I’ll try to round off a few of the rough edges before I go away for Christmas.

The green ghost leaves a white tile when it dies. I played as the in debt guy and I well and truely paid the debt off… to no avail. I saw nothing when I forced my death, saying anything about the bonus points.

P.s. Finish work in 10 mins, had to kill myself, score of 20,568 on the green ghost level.

Will fix. Thanks for the report.

Edit - Looks like the debt was counted towards your score but it just wasn’t displayed as text to the screen.

Ahhh finally got too see the ghosts in action. Evil Mana drinking bugger :-D Very good josh. THough, I think you need monsters in the water on all levels, but cos exploring with the water walk boots is good fun :-)
Finishing score… 31,262. (And it’s still overlaying a killed message over the finished message :-( )

Oh, and the first treasure chest worked fine, but all the ones afterwards opened with the puzzle already completed.

Fixed the puzzle chest thing… guess I should test more before deploying huh?

If you guys are getting to the end I guess there needs to be something alot harder to stop you, I’ll think up some stuff when I’m on holiday.

Don’t worry, it’s not too easy :-) I am not finishing every time, and I tried it on veteran mode and died within minutes a few times in a row before giving up ;-)
