Caverns of Underkeep : The Road to Alpha 2 Entry #5

The last feature that needs to be implemented (apart from some very minor stuff) before I declare Caverns of Underkeep Alpha 2.0 is some new spells.

The new spells in alpha 2.0 will be:

  1. Meteor Shower - Deal damage to everything in a 3×3 area. (Yes, including the player if they’re not careful.)
  2. Enquire – Find out how many hitpoints a selected enemy has left.
  3. Freeze Time – Time stands still for 5 rounds, allowing you to move about freely. Spell is broken if you attack anything.
  4. Telekinesis – Pick up items from a distance, and open/close doors from a distance too.

After this Alpha 2.0 release will be the first Beta version :)

Global highscore tables will not feature in Alpha 2.0, as there still exist some issues that I haven’t resolved to my complete satisfaction yet.

Edit: Looks like there will be another spell added to the next alpha – Bonus!

What about the punny little spell so the mage always has something to fall back on… or are you going to create a better mana regen item? I just don’t see the ‘mage’ as playable. I created one but once I got to stone golems, it took 10-15 fireballs per golem, making it far too tedious.

Or is that the idea, magic is less of a vocation and moreso just handy little spells for the right moment?

Golems are a little weaker now. Should take 4 fireballs to fell, they’re also a bit more rare as there are some new monsters.
There’s a more powerful rengen item.
The meteor shower will do quite a bit of damage, adding to the mage’s firepower.
If you’re playing a mage type you just need to carry around lot of potions with you :)

Right, I guess I should play it through at work today… either that or over the weekend. It wasn’t really golems that I had a problem with, it was just excessive spell use that got tedious (I’m sure goats, etc. have more HP than a golem).
I will defineatly play a mage through till lvl 4 again today and see if it’s the same.
Oh, and the potions are a good backup, but as they only heal 10 mana and a mage generally has little str/storage, hulking around sack fulls of mana potions means alot of unnessary dropping/trips to town.

On level 3 of the dungeon, just got PVC pants… +1 awesome!!! So elite lol. Does Awesome do anything? Cheeper prices? Heyyyy.

On a more serious note… $30 for 10 mana… seems a bit steep, though I must admit, I’ve been lucky with items and haven’t had to by any potions yet. Stayed at inn twice though. I’d say that Mage would be a slightly more ‘pro’ class to play as you gotta know what you’re doing.

Haha, awesome doesn’t do anything :) It was just a silly little joke I thought I’d throw in.

The new spells should be coming along soon, just got to create the meteor shower spell. Hopefully I’ll get that done today.

I need to revise all the item pricings before releasing alpha 2. They’re a little disproportiante across item types.

Cool, can’t wait for the new spells! What do you mean by item prices? So far I think they’re pretty well priced, though I must admit, I never get to spend my money, as I tend to find items before I can afford them.

Yeah, I’d kind of like people to buy stuff from shops rather than just dump all their loot onto the poor shopkeeper :)

Maybe you could have un-lootable items in the store, as well as the un-buyable items on the floor? Just died, 48870 was the score. Ended up with 10 int and stopped there, used the sun god sword to attack and just used my mana as HP. Monsters like the necromancer would be impossible to kill with fireballs, the meteor shower best be doing 3x the fireball damage at 2x the mana cost :p
Spent far too long playing so I cleared 5 levels and once I got the necro key, I just ignored the rest of level 6 and went to level 7, rounded up 3 imps and suicided. Love the game :)

You were soooo close level 7 is the last level :)

Meteor shower will be doing only 1.5x the damage of a fireball, but it covers a 3×3 area. So it’s pretty powerful in a splash damage sense.

I will need to add another single target projectile spell that does 3x fireball, It wouldn’t take me long to add since I’ve already got the fireball code in there.

Target for alpha 2 release date is 4 days away, so I’ll have enough time to add another spell.

I’m guessing you’re still updating it, but the replacement of the ‘heal me’ button in the healers doesn’t work at the moment.

Damn I wish I could edit posts instead of adding more… Pressing ‘V’ ingame now comes up with a mostly black screen also.

Playing with the new spells… fun to round up as many as you can, and… BAM!

Ha, whoops ‘v’ should be totally removed.
    Will fix healers bug.

    Thanks.

    NP, 3 more things…

If the skull staff is supposed to regen mana faster, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t.

The doors seem to be showing up as blank while squares, yet you can still use the open/close command on them.

What on earth is a Giffin? It’s one of the words for the chests…

Oh, and finally, purple death seems to vary alot, 16-22? maybe it should be 18-24? or is it supposed to be “Hmm, if I use 2 fireballs, it will be cheaper than 1 purple, and may do more damage. However I may take a hit in the process”?

p.s. Yay, special thanks to me.

Skull staff same as regen wand ‘but does more damage.
    Will fix the doors thing
    Will change ‘Giffin’ to Griffin
The purple death will stay the same for now, at least for alpha2. Suggestion noted however.
